Southern Adirondack Fiber Festival

About a year ago, while out shopping, I thought I saw a Nun, no big deal, except she wasn't a Nun, her head covering just resembled a habit.  But it made me realize, it had been years since I had seen a Nun in public.  I know, their rules have changed and they're not required to wear their habits in public any longer.  But its always nice to spot a real, live Nun!

Fast forward to this past weekend.  My DH and took a drive to upstate New York to the quiet city of Greenwich for the Southern Adirondack Fiber Festival.  To my surprise I not only saw a Nun, I saw more than one, and I saw one spinning!

The Nuns at the Community of St. Mary raise goats!  They sell the cashmere fiber and spin it into yarn.  I spoke to one of them and she told me when she's out in public wearing her habit she gets asked a lot if she's Nun.

These are some of the sister's goats.  See the big one, who is staring at my camera, handsome as he is he's a "bully," gleefully head butting all these smaller goats in his pen.

Besides looking at all the gorgeous yarn I love visiting the livestock.

I always leave wanting my very own angora bunny, but its not in the cards at this time.  These two adorable rascally rabbits are on sale from Dawn of "Furry Face Fibers," watch for her Facebook page, its under construction.

But about the only livestock I can own is one of these sheep soaps!

Introducing Lace Designer Mia Rinde, a Giveaway & Malabrigo Sale

Big "Thank you!" to everyone who entered the Mia Rinde Giveaway!

Drum roll please!  Our 3 winners are...

Seedstitch won Mimicry Mimosa PDF pattern and 1 skein of Malabrigo Lace

Jennifer Conway of the celebratinglightnessofbeing.blogspot.com blog won Pasque Flower PDF pattern

and Handstitch of the handstitch.wordpress.com blog won Bring Me Flowers PDF pattern

Please email me at Sandrasingh@sandrasingh.com to claim your prize.

I'm excited to announce that the extraordinarily talented lace designer, Mia Rinde, has joined Sandrasingh.com! One of the things l love most about running this website is discovering beautiful, interesting patterns to introduce to you and the moment I saw Rinde's Mimicry Mimosa shawl I knew I found a winner! The pattern combines just enough lace with stockinette, a lovely drape with scalloped edges (I love scalloped edges on shawls & scarves) and its knit in the soft and lovely Malabrigo Lace, plus she included two versions, one with nupps and one without (I love patterns with options). I took a look at the rest of Rinde's work and was equally impressed and I'm sure you'll be too!

Mia Rinde
Meet Mia Rinde: Rinde knits and designs from her home in Stockholm, Sweden. Her inspirations come from traditional knitting around the world but also curiosity, on the verge of an obsession, of finding out how something will look. Her patterns are often charted and include schematics making them easy to follow. Mia’s practical side encourages flexibility for knitters, who can often vary the size and appearance of their projects through optional chart repetitions.

Rinde's patterns are usually charted and often include sizing options.  She loves Malabrigo yarn especially Sock, Lace and Silky Merino and many of her patterns are written for these yarns.  To welcome Rinde and to celebrate our mutual love for this special yarn all Malabrigo Yarn is 15% Off until Sept. 27th and this post will feature a Giveaway for Rinde's work.

There will be 3 Winners and the prizes are the Mimicry Mimosa PDF pattern and 1 skein of Malabrigo Lace, the Pasque Flower PDF pattern and the Bring Me Flowers PDF pattern.

Pasque Flower
Pasque Flower features a traditional Estonian lace motif used as an intricate border and ending with romantic ruffles, its knit in Malabrigo Lace.

Leaf by Leaf
Leaf by Leaf is a triangular shawl knit from the neck down, its also knit in Malabrigo Lace. The pattern consists of different sized leaves inspired by traditional Estonian knitting and lace doilies.

Bring Me Flowers
Bound in a bouquet or climbing up a trellis, how do you like your flowers best?  In Bring Me Flowers the two are combined in a perfect blend of geometrical shapes and floral softness, knit in Malabirgo Sock.

Catching Butterflies
Rinde shares the story of her Catching Butterflies shawl..."I like to collect pretty things, but catching actual butterflies isn’t going about it my way.  I prefer to capture their shape and beauty using a Japanese butterfly lace, accentuated with a purled background and arranged to adorn a shawl."  Knit in Malabrigo Silky Merino.

Orchid Shawl
Triangular Orchid Shawl features patterning on the right side rows only, wrong side rows are purled, the pattern is charted and beads are optional.

Lavandula
Lavandula is also a traditional triangular lace shawl with patterning on the right side rows only, wrong side rows are purled.

Growing Flowers
Square shaped Growing Flowers is knit from the center out.  It’s the flowers that make it grow and it includes a border with even more flowers. The pattern includes both written and charted instructions for a shawl and blanket version.

Growing Flowers
Mimicry Mimosa
And triangular Mimicry Mimosa is knit with increases in the middle and along the edge leaf motifs in Malabirgo Lace

Famous People who Knit

I love images of famous people, actors, political activists, singers etc who also were avid knitters.  There are so many wonderful images out there, people from all walks of life knitting for lots of different reason.  Many actors learned to knit to kill time on the set.  What ever their reason, we salute them and knit right along side them!

Shirley Temple
I think Shirley is really knitting in this shot and using her needle to count stitches.  Either that or she's a really gift actress!  You know her parents lied to her about her age?  When she turned 12 or 13 they finally told her she was really a year older!

Phylis Diller
RIP Phylis...I had the pleasure of meeting her in person once, a few years ago at a party out in Mustang Ridge, TX. I told her how much I loved her laugh. I wish I knew than that she had been a knitter.

Mamma Cass

Betty Rubble
Do you think she's knitting something for Barney or Bambam?  And I wonder where I can get a set of those needles!

Wilma Flinstone
I guess this image was never used on the show?  Or maybe it was. I'd love to own it.

Jane Jetson
Meet George Jetson!  His wife Jane owned one of the very first knitting machines!

Emmeline Pankhurst
Emmeline Pankhurst is considered one of the leaders of the suffragette movement in Great Britain. Emmeline Pankhurst was born in 1858 and died in 1928.  Here she is knitting while imprisoned for her beliefs.

Martha Washington

The very first "First Lady of Knitting!"  Of course Martha was a knitter.  I wonder if she knit the stockings George is wearing?

I collect these images on Facebook, where I'm Sandra Singh and on Ravelry in my Sandrasingh.com group.  Please feel free to add any images you find on either space!
